Useful Things to Know for Sophomore Year:

Driver’s Education: During sophomore year, students take a state-required driver’s ed course during health in the first quarter. The course concludes with the state written test. When your student turns 16, use the card they receive (make sure that you save it!) to obtain a driver’s permit. Permit holders must complete six hours of driving with an instructor, which will be explained in class. Additionally, attendance at the virtual Share the Keys event is required to park on campus as a senior.

Financial Literacy: A required graduation course covering banking, budgeting, and bill paying. It’s offered as an in-school elective or online over the summer. Ensure your student discusses it with their school counselor if they haven’t completed it already.

Physical Education Independent Study:  Beginning second quarter of sophomore year, students who participate in a Summit High School athletic program or in an approved outside athletic activity may apply to take advantage of PE Independent Study (commonly called “PE Exemption” or “PEX”).  Have your student check their email for details on eligibility, application procedures, and course requirements.

Staying “in the know”: The SHS PTO Website and the District Website  are terrific resources with important links, updates, class level information and more. The district has a terrific social media presence too. Click here to update the directory, sync your calendar to include PTO events and become a member of the PTO!
